Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Jogjakarta, Indonesia has thousand researchers that have been found various innovative research and finding in health and medicine, defense and security technologies, food security, renewable energy sources, information technology and transportation management technology.
One finding in health field is the usage of sambiloto (andrographis paniculata) as herbal medicine for diabetes.
According to one of research team Prof Dr. Agung Endro Nugroho MSi Apt said that research result from mice, sambiloto contains andrographolide, deoxyandrographolide, neoandrographolide, 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide and homoandro-grapholide.
Even though the research was done to mice, but it had been known that giving isolation of andrographolide or purified sambiloto extract for five days to mice with diabetes showed insulin resistance and potent hypoglycemic activity. “Both also potent to reduce LDL and triglyceride level, but don’t give effect to cholesterol level and weight in mice,” he said to Suara Merdeka.
Combination between purified extract with metformin showed anti diabetes activity that was lower than single usage. What interesting from the results was andrographolide and sambiloto extract reduced blood glucose level in mice with Diabetes type-2 by giving enhancement on GLUT4 protein expression on muscle tissues.
In the event, he also said that new medicine findings from biodiversity in Indonesia have big potency. It was because biodiversity in Indonesia was the second largest number in the world after Brazil. Sadly, Indonesia still imported 90 percent of most medicines and raw materials. “Only 300 species that were used as medicines,” he said.
And researches about nature ingredients had been done, but were still not comprehensive and systematic.
